Kung Fu Factory
LEGO Hidden Side was definitely one of the coolest projects I got to work on. Right around this time my kids were five and seven years old, and I got to bring home the actual LEGO sets to try with them — using my own children as guinea pigs for the interfaces I was creating. It doesn't get much better than that.
I came onto the project after the previous UI/UX director had left, so I had to pick up from the existing design and build new features and new design on top of it. The game had everything — first-person perspective, AR, mobile maps, and all the other kinds of screens you'd expect to see in a full-featured mobile title.
I was also responsible for creating digital paintings for the monthly event loading screens, which was a really fun creative outlet within the project. Working with AR was extremely interesting, and designing interfaces that worked well in that context — especially making them child-friendly — was a genuine challenge.
A project with lots of different pieces, a great franchise, and the rare privilege of testing your work with your own kids at the kitchen table.
